Light and Dark a collaborative artist book created by Elizabeth Morrison, Vivienne McDermott, Ivana Girard, Francesco Geronazzo, and Kamila Waleszkiewicz for The Twists and Turns, a collaborative project presented as part of the Contemporary Print Media Awards 2026. Working with light and dark as a shared motif, the five artists created interconnected printed works that explore and expand the idea of what an artist book can be.
Light and Dark consists of a bound book alongside sculptural and suspended forms, including two works resembling lampshades. Each is treated as part of the artist book, allowing print, light, material and space to interact.
In this collaboration Kamila’s work explores the shifting relationship between physical and emotional pain and the moments of happiness, freedom and solace she experiences in nature. Darkness and light become intertwined rather than opposing states: pain exists alongside beauty, vulnerability alongside strength, and difficult experiences alongside moments of joy. Through imagery drawn from the natural world, her pages reflect on how these contrasting states can coexist and shape our experience of being alive.
Elizabeth reflects on iconic Australian dirt roads and the landscapes they traverse. Ivana responds to bushfire through themes of loss and regeneration. Vivienne explores fundamental dualities—light and dark, nature and nurture, order and chaos, fire and water, life and death. Francesco creates a dreamlike visual diary of thoughts, observations and textures drawn from nature.
Together, these distinct approaches form a shared exploration of light and dark as physical, emotional and metaphorical experiences.
