Kamila Waleszkiewicz is a Visual Artist and Author with over 24 years of experience and Organiser known for her contributions to the local arts community in Australia (from 2023), particularly through her role in the Call and Response "Conversations" project at the Inglewood Arts Hub and creation of Art Conversations WA collective. With a background that emphasises inclusivity and community engagement, Kamila has dedicated her efforts to fostering artistic collaboration among local artists. Kamila's commitment to community involvement is evident in her approach to artmaking, where she believes in the importance of supporting one another and sharing experiences. Her initiatives not only promote artistic expression but also help build lasting relationships among artists, contributing to a vibrant and inclusive arts culture. In addition to her organizational work, Kamila conducts interviews with participating artists, providing insights into their creative processes and the impact of collaborative projects on their artistic journeys. Through these efforts, she continues to inspire others while advocating for a more connected and supportive arts community.
Kamila works across printmaking, paper, sculpture, installation, moving image, sound and performance to explore how emotionally significant lived experiences continue to shape people long after they occur. She translates these invisible emotional traces into immersive, embodied environments that audiences physically move through and complete with their own presence and reflection.
Her background is in Polish Philology, which shaped her interest in how people construct meaning through experience - now explored visually and materially rather than through language.
Although the mediums have changed throughout Kamila's career, from words and books to installations, performance and moving image, the underlying enquiry has remained consistent. Kamila's work has always been concerned with how people make meaning from lived experience, and how creative practice can reveal connections between memory, identity, care and belonging.
Writing has always been an essential part of Kamila’s creative life. Alongside her published work as an author of children's books and educational publications, she have always written privately, poetry, diary entries and personal reflections. Until recently, these two practices remained separate. Her current work (2026) marks the first time this private writing has entered her visual practice, becoming materially embedded within installations, printmaking and sculptural works.
Searching - observing, looking and listening for traces of care, belonging, identity, and memory in overlooked places, objects, people and histories. Looking for scars as proofs of lived experience and healing. Reflective writing, poetry.
Transformation - artistically reworking these traces and scars (layering, concealing, revealing, fragmenting) into new material languages (perforated paper, suspended fabric, light, sound, videos, prints, paintings, etc.).
Encounter - the audience completes the work by moving through, looking, touching, listening, embodying and interpreting the space and the installation.
Kamila's work sits deliberately between opposites which exist simultaneously: visible / invisible, presence / absence, concealment / revelation, personal / shared.
Kami is the Polish diminutive of my name, Kamila. Within my art practice, it has quietly developed into a symbolic persona, not a fictional character, not an alter ego, but a presence akin to Abramović's "body as presence." Kami is shaped by several influences:
Mokosh (Mokosz in Polish) - the Slavic Mother Earth goddess, protector of women, reverence for craft and creativity, and care. Mokosh brings the water of life and safeguards it.
The Hermit (tarot) - soul-searching, introspection, inner guidance, patience, solitude, self-discovery, revelation, and the carrying of light.
Tadeusz Kantor, Polish artist - fragmentation, juxtaposition and reconstruction as an artistic method.
Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception - lived bodily knowledge as our primary way of inhabiting the world.
Martin Heidegger's poetic dwelling - inhabiting a place with care, deep appreciation and mindfulness.
Gaston Bachelard's The Poetics of Space - how lived and imagined intimate, domestic spaces shape our thoughts, memories and dreams.
Japanese philosophy (broadly) - attention, impermanence, and the beauty found in the ordinary and the worn.
Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away - hidden layers of reality, and the atmosphere of the threshold between worlds (kami-kakushi).
Kami dwells in emotional landscapes. She does not announce her presence, she observes, she creates, and she leaves places and people unchanged. What she leaves behind is a different way of seeing.

Campaign Organizer – Włącz Książkę, Włącz Czytanie (Turn on the Book, Turn on Reading), a national reading campaign co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in Poland (2010); presenting awards to outstanding contributors through an online platform, YouTube channel, social media campaigns.
Created the term opto-dyslexia and organised a social campaign Take Your Dyslexic Child to an Optometrist or an Eye Specialist to raise awareness about visual-related learning difficulties.
Developed and coordinated The Dragon Lolo Initiative, an international online project for Polish bilingual children living abroad during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing free language-learning resources and cultural engagement activities.
Led community-focused art exhibitions and participatory programs that engaged diverse audiences (Inglewood Arts Hub).
Established stakeholder partnerships with educational institutions, cultural organisations, and advocacy groups (Poland and Australia).
