Smok Lolo is an educational project I created to support children in learning the Polish language through stories, creativity, and play.
The project began in Perth, Western Australia, where I was teaching at the Polish School of Western Australia. Wanting to make learning more engaging for my students, I created Lolo, a small blue dragon who became the central character of my books, educational workbooks, and teaching materials. Friendly, curious, and adventurous, Lolo guides children through reading, writing, mathematics, and creative activities, transforming learning into an imaginative journey.
What began as a classroom character soon grew into a much larger educational initiative. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when many Polish children living abroad were unable to attend weekend language schools, Smok Lolo evolved into an international online project. It provided bilingual books, educational workbooks, free printable resources, audiobooks, reading challenges, and creative activities that enabled children to continue learning Polish from home while maintaining a connection with their language and cultural heritage.
As the creator of Smok Lolo, I developed every aspect of the project, from writing stories and designing educational activities to illustrating books, creating the visual identity, designing layouts, and producing learning resources.
Smok Lolo reflects my belief that education is most effective when it combines imagination, creativity, and play. Through the adventures of a small blue dragon, the project encourages children to develop confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning while strengthening their connection to the Polish language and culture.
The Magical Creatures Project, inviting children to invent and draw their own imaginary creatures by combining features of different animals. I transformed their drawings into professionally illustrated characters and created a series of free downloadable educational workbooks featuring reading, writing, mathematics, puzzles, and creative activities inspired by the children's original creations.
Children's books and educational workbooks centred around Smok Lolo, a friendly dragon who serves as a learning companion, helping children develop Polish language, literacy, and numeracy skills through stories and creative play.
Free online learning resources, including downloadable worksheets, handwriting practice, alphabet activities, mathematics exercises, colouring pages, games, and seasonal activities designed to support children learning Polish at home.
Mistrzostwa Szybkiego Czytania (International Speed Reading Championship), organised in collaboration with the Polish School of Western Australia. Children from different countries participated in the challenge, while the school coordinated the distribution of certificates and prizes to participants around the world.
An online learning community, bringing together children, parents, and teachers through reading challenges, creative activities, and educational content.
Access to free children's audiobooks based on my earlier stories, independently produced by Tata Mariusz in collaboration with MiastoDzieci.pl and shared through the Smok Lolo platform.
